Is it Really That Hard to Understand?

Rick Santorum recently said this:

Is anyone saying same-sex couples can't love each other? I love my children. I love my friends, my brother. Heck, I even love my mother-in-law. Should we call these relationships marriage, too? Marriage is and always has been more than the acknowledgment of the love between two people.
I really want to know.

Are people really this stupid?

Is it really that hard? Every straight person already knows, intuitively, the difference between the love for a child, a brother, a sister, etc. and that of a spouse.

Why would anyone think it would be different for gay and lesbians?
